The traditional evaluation of the championships, which has been a highlight at the Global Dressage Forum since many years, will be replaced by a discussion with riders, trainers and judges, based on a statistical analysis of Dressage results 'Judging, Myths, Facts and Solutions' by scientist and dressage fan David Stickland.
The judging process is the crucial component of turning the equestrian discipline of Dressage into a sport at local, national and international level. Classical dressage is measured by comparing performances at every level with expectations developed in some cases over centuries by the great dressage riders and trainers. By definition it is subjective, the judge looks for the various elements of a training scale, appropriate for the grade of test, and gives a score. But to be an international sport, the standards must also be universally agreed and applied and the judges must be trained to the same standards. The challenge is to make this subjective measurement as objective as possible.
In this session we will examine quantitatively the strengths and defaults of the current judging system and will show that statistical analysis of figure by figure scores and of final results can in fact throw light on the judging process and can be used to improve judging. Science can assist Art. We will compare the myths about judging with the facts, and we will discuss solutions that could enable the results to be more precise, to rank riders more effectively and ensure that the sport is measured as objectively as possible going into the 21st century.
